According to Soap Opera Digest, Steve Burton, who tied the knot with culinary expert and content creator Michelle Lundstrom on May 17, 2025, has already recorded his final episode for the time being. His last day filming was February 6, just before the series is set to enter a two-week production hiatus. Since General Hospital typically films episodes weeks in advance, fans can expect to see more of Jason Morgan’s story unfold on screen before Burton’s absence is felt by viewers.
Frank Valentini, the Executive Producer of General Hospital, shared his support for Burton's decision, saying, "We love Steve and I am glad the show worked it out so he can get some personal time with his family. We have some great Jason story leading up to spring and look forward to his return in the summer."
A Brief History of Burton's Journey with GH
This isn’t the first time that Steve Burton has taken a step back from the show. He first joined General Hospital in 1991, and after a brief exit in 1999, he returned multiple times, most notably coming back full-time in 2002. His departure in 2012 was marked by emotional reflections where he stated, "It was definitely one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make in my entire life...I grew up on the show, since I was 21 years old. The crew is like my family and obviously a lot of the cast were, too..." Despite the challenges, he later felt it was the right choice for his family.
Burton then took on the character Dylan McAvoy on The Young and the Restless from 2013 until 2017, earning another Daytime Emmy for his outstanding performance. After a stint away, he returned to General Hospital in 2021 after a recast had introduced a different character, only to leave again due to a COVID-19 vaccine policy.
His journey has come full circle as he returned to Days of Our Lives, where he began his soap career in 1988, before making a comeback to General Hospital in March 2024 during a celebratory ABC special.
